Although a large part of what Animal Care Services does is focused on
rabies prevention,
preventing and reporting animal bites are both directly connected to
prevention of this disease. It is State Law that anyone having knowledge of
an animal bite or scratch that breaks the skin must report that incident to
the local health authority. Animal Care Services is that authority in Bexar
County.
Animal Bites or scratches that break skin may be reported
24 hours a day,
365 days a year
by calling ACS at:
(210) 207-6667 -or- 311.
Children should be
cautioned to never play with wild animals, especially skunks, bats, raccoons
or unknown dogs and cats. If a biting animal dies, you should also call the
bite emergency line.
ACS staff is available to speak with at schools, neighborhood meetings and
community gatherings about bite prevention, responsible pet ownership, the
importance of spay/neuter and a variety of other topics. Contact the Animal
Care Services Speakers Bureau at 207-8173.
