There
have been some recent changes to the City’s ordinance that deals
with animals (Chapter 5). One of those changes addressed the way the
City handles pet licensing. The restructuring of the license process
includes the use of micro chips IDs instead of traditional metal
tags that are easily lost. A micro chip is a permanent form of pet
identification that is implanted via injection in the back of the
animal’s neck. They can not be lost and last the lifetime of the
pet.
Effective January 1, 2008, micro chips will be the primary form
of registration used to identify animals in the City of San Antonio.
All animals will be required to wear a tag that properly displays
the micro chip number (Section 5-103). Licensing will now be
provided free of service to all animal owners whose pet’s rabies
shots are current. We will no longer be requiring the use of
rabies license collar tags. Like the city ordinance, Texas law
also requires all animal’s owners keep their pets currently
vaccinated against rabies, however, it also does not require
rabies collar tags.
In no way does this mean that you must get your pet microchipped
at the Animal Care Services facility. Many local veterinarians
implant microchips in their clinics and fees vary. In order to offer
additional resources to the community, Animal Care Services will
implant microchips for a cost during periodic micro
chipping “clinics” which will be held at the shelter. Please call
Animal Care for day/time info and for any questions
or concerns that you may have at 210-207-4PET or via 3-1-1.
The new licensing process is actually a cost savings to pet owners
because they will no longer need to pay a yearly licensing fee.
Having your companion animal microchipped is a ONE TIME cost because
the implanted chip lasts the lifetime of your pet. Provided your
pet’s rabies shot is current each year and your pet is registered
with Animal Care Services, your animal will be considered licensed
by the City of San Antonio. Remember--In order for your pet’s
licensing to be considered “up to date,” ACS must be provided with
current information on all pets over the age of four months old.
Your contact information as well as your pet’s info (address, phone
numbers, animal age, breed, vaccination dates and chip number) must
be provided as well. Animal Care Services strongly encourages pet
owners to register their pet’s microchip id with the national
registries maintained by the microchip manufacturers.

Article V - Licenses.

certificates provided to you by your provider. This information can
be mailed to us, brought in to our shelter or faxed to us. You will
in turn receive a certificate by mail as proof that your pet is
properly registered. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery.
